PIV (Parainfluenza) mAbs
Human Parainfluenza Viruses (hPIV/PIV) are a group of common respiratory viruses (e.g. PIV1, PIV2, PIV3, and PIV4) belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family, known for causing upper and lower respiratory tract illnesses, primarily in infants and children.
Key Aspects of PIV:
• Symptoms: Generally cause mild cold-like symptoms, including fever, runny nose, and cough.
• Transmission: Spread through respiratory droplets (coughing/sneezing) and contaminated surfaces.
• Seasonality: PIV-1 and PIV-2 tend to peak in the fall, while PIV-3 is endemic year-round with peaks in spring and summer.
• Management: No licensed vaccine or antiviral treatment exists; management is focused on relieving symptoms.
Human Parainfluenza Virus Type 3 (PIV3)
PIV3 is considered the most virulent and commonly detected serotype among the four types, causing significant morbidity and mortality, especially in children and immunocompromised patients.
• Clinical Significance: PIV3 is the second most common cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in children behind Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) - we also have 9 RSV-related antibodies.
• Primary Infections: It often infects infants within the first year of life, frequently leading to bronchiolitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
• Severe Cases: It can cause severe disease and high mortality rates in hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients and immunocompromised adults.
• Distinguishing Features: Unlike PIV-1 and -2, which are strongly associated with croup, PIV-3 is more often associated with deeper lung involvement and outbreaks in nurseries.
• Transmission Duration: Infected children can shed the virus up to 1-3 weeks after symptoms end.
PIV3 is highly infectious, and while most infections in healthy individuals are self-limiting, the high morbidity in vulnerable populations has made it a key target for vaccine development.
