PEDV antibodies [porcine]

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a highly contagious alphacoronavirus (a type of coronavirus) causing severe enteritis, acute diarrhea, vomiting, and high mortality (up to 100%) in neonatal piglets. It spreads via fecal-oral transmission, causing significant economic losses to the global swine industry.

PEDV Spike Antigen Overview:
  • Structure: The spike (S) glycoprotein is a large homotrimeric viral protein on the virion surface (approx. 18 nm)
     that gives the virus its crown-like appearance.
  • Function: It is the key mediator of host cell entry, binding to host receptors on villous enterocytes in the small
     intestine, facilitating viral invasion.
  • Immunogenicity: The S protein, particularly the S1 subunit and its COE epitope, is highly immunogenic, serving
     as the main target for neutralizing antibodies.
  • Vaccine Development: Because it drives the protective antibody response, the spike protein is the primary antigen
     used in current subunit and recombinant vaccine development efforts.
